ALBUQUERQUE HISTORICAL SOCIETY BEGINS
NM STATEHOOD CENTENNIAL TEACHERS GUIDE PROJECT

New Mexico became the 47th state on January 6, 1912. President Taft signed the statehood proclamation thus the connection to Taft Mid School. The Centennial of statehood will be January 6, 2012. Students study NM history in grades 4, 7 and one semester in high school.  This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to create excitement about NM history. The efforts of the state of New Mexico are on the website www.nmcentennial.org.
 
WHAT:  Kickoff of NM Statehood Centennial Teachers Guide Project. The Albuquerque Historical Society is preparing a Teachers Guide for 4th, 7th grade teachers. It will be ready for delivery fall 2011. It will contain seven sections, along with lesson plans, that may be used by teachers during the Centennial school year, 2011-2012 and thereafter. Information will be distributed.
 
WHERE: Taft Middle School Library, 620 Schulte Rd. NW, Schulte is just north of Osuna, turn west from 4th Street. Use parking lot on west side of school near Library. PHONE 344-4389. Principal is Steve Schully.
 
WHEN: Wednesday, January 6, 2010: 2 - 3 p.m.
 
WHY: To involve APS and its students in the learning opportunities surrounding the Statehood Centennial. To inform local business leaders and elected officials about the planning effort for the Centennial of Statehood and how they can be involved.
 
ROLE OF STUDENTS: Taft students will speak about the NM flag, state seal, bird, and President Taft. The  band will play the state song "O Fair New Mexico".
