Heritage and Human Environment

• The Heritage

  The human environment of Albuquerque is enriched by the diverse cultures and contributions of various subgroups: the Pueblo Indians whose ancestors have been in the region for many millennia; the Hispanic peoples who came to the area four centuries ago; and the Blacks, Anglos, and Asiatics who are the most recent groups. The pictorial time line below will serve to introduce the human history of the Albuquerque area that follows.

  

  1. 20,000 yrs. ago...? first people entered Americas;
  2. Indians inhabited Mogollon Mts. & "Foot Corners" area;
  3. 900 - Pueblos well established in Albuquerque area;
  4. 1540 - Coronado led expedition into Rio Grande Valley;
  5. 1706 - Spanish founded Albuquerque;
  6. 1770 - School set up in San Felipe de Neri - Albq.;
  7. 1880 - Anglos came with the railroad;
  8. 1912 - New Mexico Statehood;
  9. 1940 - Sandia Base Established.
